Class-Action Suits Surface in Quebec

The Superior Court of Quebec, Canada, has certified two class-action suits against Imperial Tobacco, JTI-Macdonald, and Rothmans and its subsidiary Benson & Hedges. The suits allege that the tobacco companies are responsible for the smoking-related illnesses of millions of Quebecers. Yves-Thomas Dorval, Imperial Tobacco's head of public affairs, says, "The real winners in this class action will be the legions of lawyers who will be employed for years to come trying to deal with the individual issues that are inevitable in this type of class action."
