Nantong Filter Rod Factory Develops High-Quality Filter Rod 12/05/2000 ![]() Nantong Experimental Filter Rod Factory in Nantong City of Jiangsu Province has developed a filter rod that can effectively reduce the tar level in cigarettes.
Early this year the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration decided that the average tar level in Chinese cigarettes should be kept at about 15 mg per cigarette by the end of the year, and lowered to about 12 mg per cigarette by 2005; and the harmful substances should be reduced by at least 50% within five years.
In accordance with the decision, the Nantong factory decided to develop a new filter rod with approval from the provincial tobacco company. After nearly one year’s effort, the project has made great success. Tests by Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute and Jiangsu Provincial Tobacco Inspection Station prove that compared with ordinary acetyl cellulose filter rods, the newly developed filter rod can reduce 1 mg more of tar level, with the nicotine content unchanged; it can also reduce benzopyrene content by 15% to 22%; without altering the formula, the filter rod can improve the sensory quality of the cigarette (by 2 points in sensory grading). The structure and exterior of the new filter rod are the same as that of acetyl cellulose ones, making it easy for cigarette factories to use. Enditem
