Filtrona Scientific Services, a Filtrona plc business, has presented the second instalment of its research into e-cigarette yields at the CORESTA scientific congress held last week in Sapporo, Japan. The findings were presented by Dr Mike Taylor, Director of Scientific Development at Filtrona Scientific Services, and examined the specific effect of puff duration and volume on the yields of e-cigarettes.

The presentation to CORESTA follows Filtrona Scientific Services' recent appearance at the 66th Tobacco Science Research Conference ("TSRC"), where it unveiled the first instalment of its research into the effect of smoking parameters on the yields of e-cigarettes. The research addresses the fact that no standard method currently exists for the machine testing of e-cigarettes, with very little data available on their respective yields. Specifically, the research paper presented at CORESTA examines the effect of puff duration and volume on the deliveries of nicotine and particulate matter to e-cigarette users. In the second research phase, three different e-cigarette products were selected at random from the market for comparative testing. This was in order to provide a realistic representation of the main types of e-cigarette available, both reusable and disposable. During testing itself, the effect of puff volumes in the range of 35 to 55ml were examined, along with puff durations between 2 and 4 seconds. In his presentation to the CORESTA congress, Dr Taylor presented his findings which demonstrated that puff duration can be a significant factor in determing nicotine yields for some e-cigarette products. However, the presentation concluded the performance of e-cigarettes varied with the type of product, and that while puff duration can have a major effect for some products the effect of puff volume on yields was less than that seen in standard cigarettes.
