China: Anhui Tobacco Industry to Promote Cigar Production Development

Anhui Provincial China Tobacco Industry Corporation - the operator of the tobacco industry in east China's Anhui Province - is planning to promote the development of cigar production as a new economic growth point for the provincial tobacco industry. On September 23, 2008, General Manager Zhu Jianhua and Deputy General Manager Lu Anning of Anhui Provincial China Tobacco Industry Corporation led a group of leaders of local tobacco manufacturing enterprises to conduct an on-site inspection at the corporation's cigar-producing subsidiary in Mengcheng City of the province. During the inspection, Zhu said that there are broad prospects for development of China's cigar markets, and that Anhui Provincial China Tobacco Industry Corporation has included promotion of cigar production development into its strategic development plan. He disclosed that Anhui Provincial China Tobacco Industry Corporation will formulate a medium- and long-term program for promoting cigar production development, and will set the orientation and targets for cigar production development in the province. Zhu explicitly pointed out that the most important tasks in the development of cigar production in Anhui are to accelerate the technical transformation of existing production equipment, increase cigar production at the present time of shortage in market supply of cigar products, and improve the structure of cigar products and enlarge the cigar production capacity of Anhui through technical transformation. For the time being, Anhui Provincial China Tobacco Industry Corporation is taking steps to establish a new organizational structure and leadership panel for cigar production development, which will take charge of the work of overseeing research and development, marketing, raw materials purchase, external cooperation, etc. on a unified basis. The corporation has put on its agenda specific plans for promoting cigar production, marketing, raw materials purchase and technical transformation, in order to accelerate the technical transformation of existing production facilities and significantly strengthen the cigar production capacity of Anhui Province, according to Zhu. Under the great support of Anhui Provincial China Tobacco Industry Corporation, the project of technical transformation at the cigar-producing subsidiary in Mengcheng City has been implemented on a full scale.
