Report: Cigarette Filter Production to be Consolidated to Greensboro

A company that makes cigarette filters will close a plant in Virginia and consolidate its manufacturing at its Greensboro facility and a site in Mexico. Filtrona plc is closing its Richmond, Va., cigarette filter plant, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The company will consolidate those manufacturing operations at its 91,000-square-foot Greensboro plant and another facility in Monterrey, Mexico. The newspaper article says the Richmond plant closing will affect about 150 jobs, but it's unclear whether the Greensboro plant might add employees as part of the consolidation. A Business Journal phone call to the Greensboro plant's vice president of operations wasn't returned immediately. Filtrona's Greensboro plant opened in 1993 and has the capacity to produce more than 11 billion filter rods per year, according to the company's Web site. Filtrona PLC, a diversified manufacturing company, is based in the United Kingdom and has 37 plants in 23 countries. Endtiem
