Indonesia: Jakarta to be Cleared from Cigarette Ads

Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama has signed Gubernatorial Regulation No. 244/2015 banning indoor and outdoor cigarette billboards and ads.

Jakarta Tax Agency secretary Made Suarjaya said that the city had implemented stricter rules for cigarette ads.

"The old regulation only restricted outdoor cigarette ads. Now, indoor ads are also banned," Made said as quoted byKoran Tempo published on Thursday, January 28, 2016.

In addition, liquor billboards and ads are now only allowed at bars or other places permitted to sell alcoholic beverages. For other products, the city will enforce a regulation to shift from billboards to videotrons.

"This is to support city lighting. Foreign countries have shifted from conventional billboards to digital ones," Made added.

Article 9 of Gubernatorial Regulation No. 244/2015 on billboards requires videotrons to be installed in strategic or strictly controlled areas, which are to be expanded.

Included in the strategic areas under Gubernatorial Regulation No. 23/2006 are Jalan Rasuna Said, Jalan Jendral Gatot Subroto, Jalan Sudirman, and Jalan MH Thamrin. However, the new regulation expands the strategic areas to Jalan Doktor Satrio, Jalan MT Haryono, Jalan S. Parman, Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Hayam Wuruk. The bill also prohibits billboards to be installed on top of police outposts. Enditem
