WHO Country Office in Turkey Provides Tobacco Control Training

In collaboration with the Government of Turkey, the WHO Country Office in Turkey provided technical and logistical support to a 3-day training workshop on tobacco control for Iraqi participants in Istanbul, Turkey. The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean and the WHO Country Office in Iraq jointly conducted the training based on the request of the Iraqi Ministry of Health and the Parliament of Iraq.

The training focused on an update of global developments in the WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and the noncommunicable diseases "best buy" intervention strategies. The WHO FCTC implementation in Iraq was reviewed, focussing on demand-side measures; an implementation analysis to identify progress, gaps, challenges and opportunities, as well as to agree on a clear way forward. Next steps towards full implementation of the WHO FCTC was also discussed, including scaling up political commitment for tobacco control in general and WHO FCTC implementation in particular in Iraq.

High-level authorities of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Interior of Iraq, Parliament members, and members of the national tobacco control committee, heads of medical-related syndicates, nongovernmental organizations and media agencies attended the training.

Experts from Turkey such as from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, and the Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Authority and Dr Toker Ergüder from the WHO Country Office, Turkey delivered presentations at the training to share best practices of tobacco control in Turkey. Enditem
