Philippine: State Workers Reminded Anew of Smoking Ban Source from: Philippine Star 06/11/2015 ![]() The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has reminded state workers anew about the smoking ban in government offices and premises and against interacting with the tobacco industry. Observing the World No Tobacco Day last May 31, the CSC said government agencies should remember that violations could result in sanctions and charges. Commissioner Robert Martinez cited CSC Memorandum Circular No. 17 issued in May 2009 imposing an absolute smoking ban in government agencies that provide health, education and social welfare and development services such as hospitals, health centers, schools and universities. Martinez said smoking areas are not designated in these offices, while those not belonging to these categories may allot smoking space. The CSC and the Department of Health prohibit government officials and employees from interacting with the tobacco industry, unless necessary for regulation, supervision or control. The policy aims to protect the bureaucracy against interference or tactics and strategies by the tobacco industry in setting and implementing tobacco control measures. Government officials and workers are prohibited from providing preferential treatment such as incentives and exemptions to and soliciting or accepting donation or favor from the tobacco industry. Martinez said the health and wellness of state workers remain to be a major concern of the CSC. "While we respect the fact that smoking remains to be a personal choice, we urge public servants to choose a healthier lifestyle," he said. Enditem |
