Nigeria: One Million Smokers to Get N243 Billion Compensation

For failing to adequately warn consumers about the health risks associated with smoking tobacco companies in Canada would have to pay smokers a whooping £ 8billion (243 billion naira) in damages.

This was awarded by a Canadian judge rules in favour of smokers in Quebec in what is being reported as the biggest class action lawsuit in Canadian history.

Most of the compensation, consequent upon the lawsuit against the companies, will be given to about 100,000 current and former smokers, who alleged that three of the world's biggest brands did not adequately warn the public that cigarettes could cause cancer and other illnesses, even though the industry was aware of the dangers in the 1950s.
