South Africa: Man Stabbed to Death Over Tobacco

A 36-year-old man was stabbed to death during a "misunderstanding" over tobacco on Saturday, in Machibini Village Dutywa, Eastern Cape police reported.

Police spokesperson Jackson Manatha said that the victim was drinking beer in the village when he and the 19-year-old suspect had a misunderstanding over tobacco.

"It is alleged that the suspect drew his knife and stabbed the deceased on his upper body. It is not clear if there were other village men who could have stopped the suspect from fatal stabbing the deceased."

The suspect was arrested and the knife that was used in the murder recovered.

"He has been charged with murder and will appear before the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Monday," Manatha said.

The identity of the deceased is still being withheld until his next of kin are informed of his death. Enditem
