Kenya: Proposed Tobacco Law to Protect Farmers

Cigarette manufacturers will be compelled to give tobacco factory workers protective gear should a proposal by Suna West MP Joseph Ndege is be passed into law.

The Tobacco Control (Amendment ) Bill 2015 is also meant to protect small-scale farmers against exploitation by manufacturers and investors.

Ndege wants the government to ensure tobacco prices are based on cost of production and international market indicators.

"There is conclusive evidence linking tobacco production, use and exposure to its smoke with debilitating diseases, disability and death," he said. Enditem
