Australia and Oceania, Fiji: Smoke-Free Area Fight Source from: Fiji Times Online (fj) 01/04/2015 ![]() THE Labasa Town Council will work closely with the Ministry of Health to increase no-smoking signs at all smoke-free zones in the municipality. Special administrator Vijay Chand said this was needed because a lot of people were still smoking in public places. "There are laws in place and I think we will have to plan and work closely with the Ministry of Health to have these signages and displays erected at all non-smoking zones in town," Mr Chand said. "We have produced some smokers in court a few months ago and some have been fined by the Ministry of Health for smoking in prohibited places. "We will work with the ministry to have the signages erected so people are aware of the areas that are forbidden to smoke in." Non-smoking zones under the Tobacco Control Legislation Amendment Act 2010 include amusement centres, theatres, sports stands, hospitals, airport terminals, eating houses, internet shops and any form of water transport, to name a few. Prescribed smoke-free areas include workplaces accessible to the public, enclosed entrance ways, foyers, classrooms, lecture theatres, municipal markets and public toilets, among others. Enditem |
