Dubai Bans Smoking Shisha Behind the Wheel

Combing your hair, getting dressed or slapping on fresh make-up while in the driver's seat in Dubai will earn you a steep fine and add black points to your traffic record.  Behind-the-wheel primping is now punishable by law!

The federal traffic council also plans to introduce a new penalty against anyone caught smoking shisha while driving, as this practice is deemed dangerous and could potentially cause road accidents. Um, do you think?

Dubai's police commander assistant, Major General Mohammed Al Zafin, told Albayan Daily that the new rules aim to penalize those who engage in any activities that distract drivers from safe driving and likely result in accidents. Even adjusting your neck tie is taboo.

"Those involved in such practices while driving will be fined Dh1,000 and have 12 black points added to their traffic record," said Al Zafin.

A proposal to ban shisha smoking and mobile phone use for drivers recommends an associated fine of Dh500. There was no word on whether behind-the-wheel coffee drinking or shawarma eating would become punishable offences. Enditem
