Thailand: Graphic 85% Cigarette Warning to be Reinforced

The law requiring a mandatory graphic health warning that takes up 85% of a cigarette packet, is to be in force by September 24, 2014. When the new packaging law is active, it will be the largest such graphic warning in the world, with the use of 10 different warning graphics stipulated.

The enforcement is due to the Ministry of Public Health's announcement on tobacco labels approved under Thai law. The regulations require larger graphic health warnings, to cover 85% of both sides of cigarette packages. The regulations are now due to take effect on 24th September 2014. The chilling warning graphics and warnings are believed to psychologically discourage smokers from filling their lungs with carcinogens. A quit-smoking hotline number also appears on the packages.

Both manufacturers and importers are required by law to have 85% warning graphics on the package. Offenders will face penalties of up to 20,000 baht. Enditem
