Poland to Appeal Ban on Flavored Cigarettes Source from: Warsaw Business Journal (pl) 05/16/2014 Polish officials will try to block the ban on menthol cigarettes introduced by the European Parliament earlier this year. According to the new laws, sales of flavored cigarettes, such as menthol ones would be banned in the EU starting 2020. Poland is one of the biggest tobacco producers in the EU and such a ban would strongly affect it.
Poland is currently working on the appeal to be filed with the EU's Court of Justice. "Polish government wants to demonstrate that the Tobacco Directive is based on unsound legal grounds," according to Polish daily Puls Biznesu, citing an anonymous source, adding that benefits from curbing health risks caused by smoking are disproportionate to the effect it will have on internal markets. According to the newspaper such an appeal could be submitted to the Court before the EU elections scheduled for May 25. Enditem |
