Tobacco Regulation Sends ￡150m up in Smoke at BAT

Impending tobacco regulation across the European Union will cost British American Tobacco more than ￡150 million, the company has revealed.

MEPs recently agreed to tighten laws governing cigarettes for the first time in a more than a decade, forcing BAT to convert or introduce new machines over the next two years.

The bill comes as Imperial Tobacco last month announced plans to relocate its factories in Nottingham and France towards Eastern Europe. Imperial blamed regulation, among other things. Enditem
