UK: Price of 20 Cigarettes Rises by 28p As Tobacco Duty Raised Again by George Osborne Source from: Mirror 03/20/2014 In today's Budget statement the Chancellor went for the same duty escalator on tobacco as he has in previous years, putting a packet of 20 fags up by 28p. Anti-smoking campaigners had been pushing for a five per cent rise which would have added a further 21p to that rise. "Tobacco duty has been rising by 2% above inflation and will do so again today," he said. "This escalator was due to end next year – but there are no sound health reasons to end it, so it will be extended for the rest of the next Parliament." In a packed House of Commons, the Tory Minister delivered his annual spring statement where he outlined the Government's financial plans for the next year. Enditem |
