UK: Price of 20 Cigarettes Rises by 28p As Tobacco Duty Raised Again by George Osborne

In today's Budget statement the Chancellor went for the same duty escalator on tobacco as he has in previous years, putting a packet of 20 fags up by 28p.

Anti-smoking campaigners had been pushing for a five per cent rise which would have added a further 21p to that rise.

"Tobacco duty has been rising by 2% above inflation and will do so again today," he said.

"This escalator was due to end next year – but there are no sound health reasons to end it, so it will be extended for the rest of the next Parliament."
