Nigeria Tasked On Tobacco Control Bill

The Federal Government has been urged to ensure the passage of the National Tobacco Control Bill.

Director of Africa Programmes, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a US based organization, Josuah Kyallo said the bill is long overdue. He maintained that passage of the bill will go a long way in saving the lives of many Nigerians, especially youths.

"If the bill is passed, it will make a huge mark in Nigeria, in Africa and in the world at large because Nigeria has a population that cannot be ignored," he said.

Kyallo, who spoke at a media briefing organized by the Environmental Rights Action/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria, (ERA/ FoEN) in collaboration with Civil Society and Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) in Lagos, said: "It is very disturbing that the number of people dying in Nigeria as a result of using tobacco related products is far more than the number dying as a result of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined".
