Cyprus Signs Protocol against Illicit Tobacco Trade

Cyprus has signed the protocol to eliminate illicit trade in tobacco products.

The protocol which was adopted in Seoul, in November 2012 by the parties to the framework convention on tobacco control (WHO FCTC), sets out the rules for eliminating illegal tobacco products trade by way of effective control of the chain of supply and international cooperation.

By adopting this new protocol by consensus, the countries reiterated their commitment to protect their citizens� health, particularly that of the young and the vulnerable, WHO FCTC head Haik Nikogosian said.

The protocol, which was adopted at the 66th UN General Assembly, was opened for signature, on February 28, 2012, in Geneva and remains open for signature at the UN, in New York.

The protocol will be put into force after 40 countries sign it.

Cyprus is the 36th country to have signed it. Enditem
