Jamaica: Last Day for Public Comments on Tobacco Control Regulations

August 13  is the last day for Jamaicans to make submissions as the government carries out consultations on the tobacco control regulations.

The controversial regulations govern the ban on smoking in public spaces which has been in effect since July 15.

The Ministry of Health is reminding all members of the public that they may contact the Tobacco Control Task Force and Tobacco Control Command Centre with their comments.

The unit was recently set up by Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson to monitor public sentiment and to allow people to obtain information and clarification on the regulations and the effects of tobacco exposure on health.

The regulations have been the subject of much criticism by various stakeholders, who've argued they are too restrictive.

In Parliament on July 30, Dr Ferguson announced that there would be a redefinition of a public space and a workplace.

Ferguson also said private residences and private motor vehicles will be removed from the list of prohibited places.

The Health Minister has insisted that the ban on smoking will remain in place.

Dr Ferguson says he intends to continue the dialogue to ensure smooth implementation of the tobacco regulations. Enditem
