Jamaica: Marches Scheduled in Support of Ban on Public Smoking

Several organisations are collaborating to hold marches in three towns across Jamaica in support of the ban on smoking in public places, which comes into effect on Monday.

The marches are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Monday morning in Morant Bay, St Thomas; Half-Way Tree, St Andrew; and Montego Bay, St James.

The march is being organised by the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA), the Heart Foundation of Jamaica, Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control and the Jamaica Cancer Society.

Director of Client Services at the NCDA, Sisilyn Malcolm, says the marches will be used to further sensitise the public about the ban, and highlight the various services offered by the agencies to assist persons to quit smoking.

She says the activities will include marching bands and entertainment as well as brief presentations.
