Malaysia: Kelantan Customs Seize Cigarettes Worth more than RM200,000

Customs here are tracking down a man believed to be the mastermind of the largest cigarette smuggling syndicate in the state following the arrest of his 21-year-old son and the seizure of various types of cigarettes valued at RM200,000 in a house at Kampung Lemal, Pasir Mas yesterday.

Its director, Datuk Azis Yacub said in the 4pm raid, based on public information, customs seized 22,278 cartons of cigarettes such as Gudang Garam involving evaded tax worth nearly RM2 million.

"We detained a man in the house and seized a van believed to be used to transport and distribute cigarettes around Kelantan," he told reporters at his office here today.

Azis said the department believed the man who was being tracked down was among the largest illicit cigarette distributors in the state.

"We believe the smashing of the syndicate will severely cut supply of illegal cigarettes in the state," he added. Enditem
