New Zealand: NZ Ski Bans Smoking at Remarkables

Skiers taking to the slopes as the season begins will not be able to smoke at The Remarkables ski field near Queenstown with owner NZ Ski banning smoking on field.

NZ Ski chief executive James Coddington said visitors would be banned from smoking at The Remarkables and the company has banned all its 1200 staff from smoking at its three ski fields from the start of the season in 2013.

"It's about healthy life styles," Mr Coddington said.

"We're promoting health and well being for our staff and our guests."

Visitors will be able to smoke at NZ Ski's Coronet Peak ski field in Queenstown and Mt Hutt in Canterbury.

Other ski fields around the world had smoking bans, but Mr Coddington believed this was the first ban at a field in the southern hemisphere.

Staff were supportive of the ban, he said.

Coronet Peak kicked off the ski season today, with about 2000 people hitting the slopes.

It had a base of 30cm on the lower slopes and 40cm up top.

The Remarkables is due to open on June 22 and Mt Hutt on June 15. Enditem
