Korea - South: Smokers to be Ineligible for Air Force Pilots Source from: Yonhap News Agency (kr) 06/06/2013 ![]() The Air Force said Wednesday it has decided to disqualify smokers from applying for its pilot selection test, drawing controversy over its legality and fairness. Starting next month, applicants who test positive for nicotine will not be eligible for flight training, a mandatory course to become a pilot. To induce pilots who smoke to kick the habit, military authorities plan to suspend those who test positive for nicotine during their regular checkups. The decision is aimed at selecting pilots who have "a strong willingness to maintain a sound body," according to Air Force officers. The Air Force has been pushing to implement non-smoking measures such as the designation of all military bases and barracks as non-smoking zones starting July 1. The moves, however, have drawn fire for possibly violating the basic rights of officers and servicepersons. In the wake of the criticism, the Air Force belatedly changed its course, allowing smoking rooms to be set up at least 50 meters away from barracks instead of a complete ban. Enditem |
