Montserrat (uk), South America/Caribbean, UK: Ministry of Health to Highlight Health Risks of Tobacco Smoking

Public health professionals are being invited to take part in a tobacco awareness workshop this Wednesday organised by the Ministry of Health and Social Services as it commemorates World No Tobacco Day.

This Wednesday, June 5 at 2pm, Health Promotions Officer Wayne Hunte, will make the presentation at the Physiotherapy Suite at Glendon Hospital. Hunte is a Certified Smoking Cessation Practitioner and a trained Tobacco Dependence Treatment Specialist.

Topics to be discussed include: Tobacco Dependence as a Chronic Disease, Three Criteria to Diagnose Tobacco Dependence and The Dance of Second Hand Smoke.

Nurses, physicians and other health practitioners are expected to attend the session.

May 31 has been designated to be the annual commemoration of World No Tobacco Day by the World Health Organisation. The aim is to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

This year's theme is Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship. According to a notice from the ministry, "evidence shows that comprehensive advertising bans lead to reductions in the numbers of people starting and continuing smoking." Enditem
