Indonesia: Anyone Smoking in Public Transport, Sanction Goes to Public Transport Operators

The copious amount of smokers in public transportation triggers anti-smoking activists and enthusiasts to hold a no-smoking campaign (KDM) at Senen Terminal, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (5/21). In the campaign, thousands of no-smoking stickers are pasted on the windows of various public transportation modes, starting from big buses to public minivans.

The stickers-pasting is conducted by students of Indonesia University, Public's Health Faculty, with the help of the police and officers from Transportation Department. The stickers are featuring no-smoking slogans and a picture of someone with mouth cancer due to smoking habit, as well as featuring no-smoking rules and regulations and a hotline for someone to report to if they found anyone smoking in public transportation.

Head of Indonesia Consumers Board Foundation (YLKI), Tulus Abadi, said at this time there is Governor Rule No. 88/2010 about No Smoking Area, and one of which is public transportation.

"It is undeniable that many people are still smoking onboard public transportation. The statistics are 57 percent crews and 43 percent passengers. Most smokers are the drivers who tend to smoke while driving," he uttered, Tuesday (5/21).

Abadi told that by plastering 42,000 stickers in some terminals in Jakarta, the action is expected could reduce smokers smoking in public transportation. "At least reducing smokers, especially public transportation crews," he added.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Jakarta Transportation Department, Dradjad Adhyaksha, hopes that with such campaign there will be awareness of smokers not to smoke in public transportation. Aside from that, he also wants the citizens to report if they see smokers smoking in public transportation.

"If anyone is smoking in public transportation, the sanction will be given to the public transportation operators. So, public transportation owners are also urged to monitor and participate in our campaign," he stated. Enditem
