US: Law Would Allow Some Easing of Michigan''s Smoking Ban

A bill is being introduced in the Michigan House that would make some changes to the state's smoking ban to allow for a little more leeway in how restaurants, bars, and private clubs can operate.

State Representative Doug Geiss says that the ban we have now is too restrictive, and his plan would let bars have totally separate smoking areas, if they wanted. It would be required to have a separate ventilation system from the reest of the establishment, and be sealed.

The legislation would also let private clubs -- like the VFW -- make their own decisions on whether or not to allow smoking. Geiss says that he's heard from many bars owners who've seen their business drop dramatically since the smoking ban was passed three years ago. Enditem
