New Zealand: Participants for Smokefree Policy Focus Groups Needed

The draft Smokefree Outdoor Areas Policy has now been approved for public consultation.

The Policy proposes to encourage people to refrain from smoking in 'clean air zones'. Palmerston North City Council has no powers to enforce the policy, so it is not a ban.

The Council is offering a number of ways for people to have their say on the draft Policy. One of these ways is by setting up focus groups.

"PNCC is looking for participants across a wide range of the public. Non-smokers, smokers and ex-smokers are all encouraged to register their interest to participate. The comments and conclusions from these interactions will help with the development of the policy," Peter Ridge policy analyst said.

The draft Policy proposes to create 'clean air zones' in the outdoor spaces of Council facilities and properties. It also encourages businesses to create 'clean air zones' in the outdoor spaces of their premises. Through this policy the Council aims to lower the number of smokers, improve the health of the city, and contribute to the Government's 'Smokefree 2025' goal.

Those interested in joining a focus group can register by calling PNCC on 356 8199 and asking for Juliet Thomas, by 26 April. Enditem
