Canada: Supreme Court Won''t Hear Appeal from Six Nations Tobacco Company on Tax Penalties

A Six Nations tobacco company has failed in its bid for a Supreme Court of Canada review of a lower-court hearing over having to pay excise duty with interest.

Grand River Enterprises Six Nations Ltd. sells tobacco products on the reserve and a tax court judge previously held that the company was responsible for 23 assessments for "excise duty and related interest" on tobacco products manufactured by the company from September 2005 to July 2007 and sold to retailers located on reserves in Ontario.

The Federal Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal and today (Thursday) the Supreme Court of Canada said it would not hear the case, dismissing the case with costs. Enditem
