Indonesia: Governor Bans Smoking in Office

East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek Ishak has issued a ban on smoking in gubernatorial offices.

"For all officials and staff as well as guests who want to smoke, we have provided a smoking area outside the building," Imanuddin, East Kalimantan administration spokesman, told The Jakarta Post over the weekend.

The ban is a first step the governor has taken in a plan to better regulate civil servants, including Awang's plan to make the province a corruption-free zone. A ban governing civil service behavior is also said to be in the works.

Awang said that he wanted his officials to have integrity as defined by 20 indicators, including signing integrity pacts, implementing transparent governance and submitting wealth disclosures.

The governor also vowed to crackdown on absenteeism and tardiness, vowing to sanction civil servants who were not at their desks without a good reason. Enditem
