China: Smoking Ban Assessment Needs More Time: Leong

Angela Leong On Kei, executive director of SJM Holdings Ltd, says that it will take a few more months to fully evaluate the effectiveness of the partial smoking ban recently introduced for Macau's casinos.

Ms Leong told reporters yesterday that it is not possible to simply use the air quality data from the Lunar New Year period to evaluate the tobacco ban, as it is a peak season for the industry, our sister publication Business Daily reports.

She was commenting on criticism from casino worker groups, who say air quality in smoking areas is very bad. They have been calling for a full smoking ban.

Starting from January 1 this year, a partial smoking ban has been in effect in casinos, which can only have smoking areas covering up to 50 percent of their gaming floor. Enditem
