Bahrain: Ministry of Health Bans the Selling of Tobacco Products Devoid of Warning Images

Ministry of Health Assistant Undersecretary for Primary Healthcare and Public Health cum Deputy Chairperson of the National Anti-Smoking Committee, Dr. Mariam A. Al-Jalahma, stated that the Ministry of Health has issued a circular to all tobacco import and distribution firms urging them to withdraw all tobacco products which are devoid of warning images starting from 9th February 2013 and to either destroy or re-export such products under the supervision of the Directorate of Public Health.

 

The circular explained that inspectors from the Committee on Follow Up of Implementation of the Tobacco Ban Law will confiscate all tobacco products which do not show warning images as from 10th February 2012 otherwise violators will be referred to the Public Prosecution.

The Kingdom of Bahrain began compliance with the GSO 246/2011 uniform GCC technical regulation regarding tobacco packages as from 0th August 2012 which impose on tobacco companies to show warning images on not less than 50% of the façade and background of their tobacco products both in Arabic and English and to show the percentage of nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide.
