Bulgarian Expert: EC Requirements for Tobacco Production to Boost Smuggling

"Hostility towards the tobacco sector will not conceal the important economic, juridical and social problems, which are set with the proposal of the European Commission (EC) about changes in the Tobacco Products Directive," Tsvetan Filev, Chairperson of the Bulgarian National Association of Tobacco Producers, speaking at the extraordinary committee of the European association of tobacco growers UNITAB held in Paris, FOCUS News Agency reporter informs.

"We believe that the numerous shortcomings in the Directive will be examined, so as to guarantee that the EU is introducing a regulatory framework for the tobacco products in Europe that is fair, scientifically-grounded and efficient, as far as diminishing the harm caused by smoking is concerned, without imposing unnecessary burden on the economy and employment," Filev commented further.

In his words, the tobacco has a key role in the Bulgarian agriculture, providing the living of thousands of families in the depopulated regions of our country, as well as in the economy in terms of trade and export. Enditem
