India, UK: Green Award Violates International Tobacco Control Treaty, Says Pressure Group

A green award violates key provisions of a legally-binding treaty, it has been claimed by a pressure group.

Advocacy Forum for Tobacco Control (AFTC) said the naming of the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2012  seemed to violate the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and associated guidelines.

The group was speaking in a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, who is due to present the awards on Monday.

However, the President's press secretary Venu Rajamony said: "FCTC doesn't contain any provision regarding association of government functionaries with award functions.

"The Sustainable Awards Event is organised by the CII-ITC Centre for Excellence in Sustainable Development and it has nothing to do with the promotion of tobacco." Enditem
