Indonesia: SBY Signs Tobacco Law

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono finally signed Government Regulation No. 109/2012 on Safety of Ingredients Containing Addictive Substances such as Tobacco Products on Health on Dec. 24, 2012.

Based on information in www.setneg.go.id, the regulation has eight chapters and 65 articles. It regulates production matters such as nicotine and tar content level testing, additives use, tobacco product packaging, and health warnings on cigarette packs.

In addition, the Regulation addresses the circulation of tobacco products, ranging from sales, advertising and promotion bans, to tobacco product sponsorship. "It is forbidden to sell tobacco products: a) using self-service machines, b) to children under the age of 18 years, and c) to pregnant women," reads Article 25 of the regulation.

Stipulated in Article 50 paragraph (1) are No Smoking areas, which include health care facilities, teaching and learning areas, children playgrounds, places of worship, public transport, workplaces, public places, and other areas declared as non-smoking. Enditem
