Indonesia: Greater Jakarta: Littering, Smoking on Street May Cost A Fortune Source from: Jakarta Post (id) 01/09/2013 ![]() The municipality administration has passed new regulation on littering and smoking on the street, punishing violators with three months in prison or fines of up to a draconian Rp 50 million (US$5,180). Head of Depok Public Order Agency, Gandara Budiana, said bylaw No. 16/2012 on public order would take effect in 2014. "We are now familiarizing the public with the new regulation and sanctions through media and subdistrict administration offices," he said on Monday. The regulation replaces a 2001 bylaw on public order that did not state any sanction. The new bylaw prohibits 18 activities in public places, include begging and singing. Gandara said all Depok residents and visitors aged 17 and older would be subject to the regulation, while minors would only get warnings. The bylaw states that littering is subject to a Rp 25 million fine, while the sanctions against smoking on the street carries the harshest punishment. |
