Australia: Plan to Increase Taxes on Tobacco

The latest National Tobacco Strategy this time contains a new plan of repeatedly increasing taxes on tobacco over the coming five years. The report says the battle to ensure protection of public health policy has for the first time been listed as its top priority.

As per the findings, the public health policy covers tobacco control policies from the interference of tobacco industry. The new move is being hoped to help in making extra revenue up to billions of dollars for the commonwealth.
 
Also, it is the belief that the price of a cigarette packet would go up touching almost more than $20. It is being said that the prices may continuously rise over the years. The plans were launched this week, along with full details related to these.
 
However, the National Tobacco Strategy was agreed upon by state and territory governments before the detailed release only. The report finds that amongst other priorities of the strategy would be a greater anti-smoking advertising campaign and introduction of new plain packaging laws.
 
Studies including examination of anti-smoking initiatives have been evident that price rise of tobacco has a big impact on reducing smoking habit amongst consumers, lower socio-economic group in particular. Enditem
