Nigeria Moves to Reduce Consumption of Tobacco

Even though it is home to one of the biggest tobacco industries in the world, Nigeria has officially joined some other African countries to adopt new regulation that allows effective and significant reduction in consumption of tobacco by 2013. Part of the strategies being used to actualise the goal is increase in the price of the product.

According to the Sunday Tribune a national study had already been conducted by a national research team, made up of experts from various ministries, departments and agencies with a view to articulating research-based assessment of tobacco taxation in the country.
 
Information has it that a national team of researchers was mandated to carry out work, with support from a team of regional experts which Nigeria had keyed into. It was further gathered that national legislation in the fight against tobacco was expected to be harmonised and tighter measure against tobacco billed to kick off by 2013.
 
Also, according to the findings, consideration had already been given to national report on tobacco taxation and by that, the country was to join forces with other 15 countries to reduce tobacco intake in the country. Enditem
