Fiji: Call to up Duty on Liquor and Tobacco

THE Fiji Council of Social Services has applauded the increased allocations made to combat non-communicable diseases in the 2013 budget.

However, they have also called for at least 20 per cent duty on alcohol and tobacco as both are major contributors to NCDs in Fiji.

In a statement issued by FCOSS, executive director Hassan Khan said the increased advertising measures taken on tobacco should also be mirrored in alcohol.

Mr Khan also applauded the government's increased allocation of $9million to law enforcement agencies.

"As the crime industry is going into a more complicated phase the increased allocations reflects government's commitment to keep Fiji safe and secure."

"In this regard, it is hoped that as a preventative measure there would be serious thought given to the allocation of funds for the CSO activities on nurturing of families as this will contribute to the reduction of domestic violence, child sexual abuse and abuse of the elderly that has become so prevalent in Fiji."
