Australia: Tasmania s Tobacco Phase-out Likely to Fail Source from: Tobacco Reporter 08/27/2012 ![]() The House of Assembly [lower house] in Tasmania, Australia, is expected to reject a proposal to ban the purchase of tobacco products by anyone born after 2000, according to an Australian Broadcasting Corp story relayed by the TMA. The proposal, put forward by Ivan Dean, an Independent member of the Legislative Council [upper house], was accepted by that body on August 21. But the government is expected to reject the proposal because its power-sharing partners, the Greens, say they are against prohibition. The main opposition party and an independent member of the Legislative Council are also against the idea. Dean has also suggested raising the legal smoking age. Enditem
