Australia Examining 10-Year Penalties for Smuggling Source from: Tobacco Reporter 06/29/2012 ![]() People smuggling cigarettes into Australia would face up to 10 years in prison under a proposal to amend the Customs Act introduced into parliament today, according to a Daily Telegraph story relayed by the TMA. At present, cigarette smugglers face financial penalties ranging up to five times the amount of evaded taxes. Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon, said current penalties for cigarette smuggling were "very low" compared to penalties for other serious fraud against the Commonwealth. Enditem
