British American Tobacco Kenya Chairman Evanson Mwaniki Retires

The  British American Tobacco ( BAT) Kenya Chairman  Evanson Mwaniki has retired. The board has since appointed non-executive Director  George Maina as the new Chairman.

In a statement, the cigarette manufacturer said Mr Maina comes from a business and technical background, having spent nearly three decades in the oil industry in East and West Africa, Central America and the Caribbean.  "I am honoured to replace a leader of such a calibre as Evanson," said Maina when his appointment was announced.

Mr Mwaniki had been on the board of  BAT since 1995 when he joined as a non-executive Director, becoming chairman in November of the same year, a position he has held since then.

Shareholder growth

Mwaniki had  been one of the longest serving directors ever at  BAT Kenya. During Mwaniki's  tenure,  the company enjoyed growth in shareholder value.

"The management have worked hard to deliver the results that have been achieved, and shown a commitment to succeed that is seldom matched in the commercial world today, despite the challenges they face," Mwaniki said in Nairobi recently. "I am merely their leader."

Over the last five years the Nairobi manufacturing plant has expanded to become a regional hub.

Growing exports and domestic demand have resulted in an investment in excess of Sh5 billion in the plant during this period to increase capacity, enable productivity and support innovation. Enditem
