SOLOMON Islands Red Cross yesterday received $100,000 from the Solomon Islands Tobacco Limited towards its Temotu tsunami relief operation.
Speaking during the short presentation of the cheque to the Red Cross, the Finance and Administration Manager of the SI Tobacco, Martin Weisz said the company is very happy to help in the efforts of helping our people who have been affected by the tragic earthquake and tsunami which claimed lives and properties in Santa Cruz.
"We are happy to help in whatever small things we can do to quickly get back our people's lives to normal," he said.
Mr Weisz also said his company would like the donation to be used wisely and to ensure that it gets to the people who are affected quickly.
Red Cross has been chosen to receive the support on behalf of the affected communities because of the relief work they do.
Secretary General of the SI Red Cross, Joanne Zoleveke, thanked SI Tobacco for their trust in the Red Cross to deliver the humanitarian services on its behalf to the vulnerable people affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Temotu.
"SI Red Cross is honoured to have the trust of donors from the private sector like the SI Tobacco in these times of disaster," Ms Zoloveke said.
"I would like to assure Solomon Islands Tobacco Company that SI Red Cross will deliver needed services to the people of Temotu Province in these difficult times and be accountable for the generous support," she added.
Solomon Islands Red Cross has completed its rapid assessment of the damages caused by the tsunami in Santa Cruz and is about to complete its detailed assessment phase as well.
Furthermore, the SI Red Cross continues to provide clean drinking water to the affected population of Santa Cruz.
It has two water purifying machines that are now stationed in two separate locations to be accessible to the entire Santa Cruz population affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Enditem
