JT Says Sales to Syria Stopped

Japan Tobacco Inc. said today that its international arm had stopped shipments of cigarettes to Syria. According to a Wall Street Journal story relayed by the TMA and Tobacco Reporter, the EU's anti-fraud watchdog, OLAF, is investigating whether Japan Tobacco International violated sanctions imposed on Syria on May 23 last year. In a press note, JT referred to a news story and said that it wanted to clarify that Japan Tobacco International, which operated the JT Group's international tobacco business, conducted its business in strict compliance with laws and adhered to all sanctions, including those imposed by the EU. JTI had stopped its shipments to Syria, it added. "Furthermore, JTI is fully cooperating with the EU authority's investigation by proactively providing them with the information and documents," the press note stated. Enditem
