Regional Corporation Has Major Harm-Reduction Project Passed STMA Appraisal

China Tobacco Chuanyu Industrial Co., Ltd. - the regional operator of the tobacco industry in southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing City - has had a major tobacco harm-reduction project jointly undertaken with the University of Science and Technology of China passed technical appraisal by the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA). On March 23, the Appraisal Committee of the STMA conducted technical appraisal of the project of "research of technologies for selective reduction of harmful substances and application in products", before drawing a conclusion that the project has reached advanced international levels in terms of applying microporous-mesoporous materials in reducing the content of harmful substances in cigarettes. The project of "research of technologies for selective reduction of harmful substances and application in products" is the fourth major achievement made by China Tobacco Chuanyu Industrial Co., Ltd. in the research and development of technologies for reducing the content of harmful substances in cigarettes. Previously, the project of "comprehensive harm reduction with composite biological agents" and the project of "research of the relationship between technological parameters in key procedures of cigarette processing and the quantity of emission of seven types of harmful components and tar in cigarette smoke" independently undertaken by the corporation each won a Grade Two prize for scientific-technological progress by the tobacco industry of China. Besides, the project of mitigation of harmfulness by cigarette smoke to the respiratory system" won a Grade Two prize for scientific-technological progress by Sichuan Province. The making of the four achievements means that China Tobacco Chuanyu Industrial Co., Ltd. has developed a system of technologies for comprehensive reduction of the content of harmful substances in cigarettes that are advanced in China and are among the first rate in the world. It was reported that China Tobacco Chuanyu Industrial Co., Ltd. won the bid to undertake the project of "research of technologies for selective reduction of harmful substances and application in products" from tender invitation by the STMA in 2007. Over the past four years since it won the bid, China Tobacco Chuanyu Industrial Co., Ltd. has made painstaking efforts to conduct research for fulfilling the project, independently developing the microporous-mesoporous materials. On the basis of making a series of experiments on the quantity of addition, animality and stability, it successfully applied the materials in reducing the content of harmful substances in cigarettes. Results of experiments indicate that the microporous-mesoporous materials neither generate new harmful substances nor negatively impact the flavor of cigarette smoking. Testing data obtained by Zhengzhou Tobacco Research Institute in central China's Henan Province suggest that after the microporous-mesoporous materials are added into the filter tip, the contents of three major harmful substances in the mainstream cigarette smoke will respectively go down by 25 percent, 29.1 percent and 34.2 percent, with the contents of tar, carbon monoxide, ammonia, etc also going down to different extents. In the period of research of the project, China Tobacco Chuanyu Industrial Co., Ltd. applied to the State Intellectual Property Office for a total of 13 patents of invention on the relevant achievements in scientific-technological research it had made. So far, it has won eight of the patents. Presently, the taskforce designated to fulfill the project has solved many crucial problems in converting the achievement into a practical technology. So far, the technology has been applied in the production of six cigarette products of the Pride brand family, with the generation of obvious economic and social results. Enditem
