BAT Leading the Way in Sustainability

British American Tobacco has been included in both the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index (DJSI Europe) for the 10th year running. The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the economic, environmental and social performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. One covers the world, the other Europe, and they are based on the co-operation between Dow Jones Indexes and the Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) Group. "A detailed assessment of companies' performance covers both general and industry specific criteria, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, water use and waste generation, and the integration of sustainability strategies into core businesses," BAT said in a note posted on its website. "Our overall score was 88%, an increase of 10% from last year, and placing us as industry leader." "We scored a maximum 100% rating in four key areas - Risk and Crisis Management, Fuels for Tobacco Curing, Responsible Marketing and Combatting Smuggling." "We also scored better than the sector average in all nineteen categories and achieved the best scores for the industry in twelve out of the nineteen categories. These included strategic areas of concern such as Corporate Governance, Environmental Reporting, Environmental Policy, Labour Practice Indicators, Human Capital Development and Standards for Suppliers." "British American Tobacco was the first tobacco company included in the DJSI indexes 10 years ago and we have been included each year since," said Jennie Galbraith, international sustainability manager. "This shows that our employees across the group have consistently met the standards required of a sustainable international business." Enditem
