Canada's Newest Territory on Established Path

The government of Canada's newest territory, Nunavut (area, two million square km, population 30,000) plans to sue tobacco companies for health-care costs allegedly associated with smoking. Nunavut Justice Minister, Keith Peterson, said the territory's actions would "take some time" because officials were just beginning the research stage of the process. "Medical records could go back to the 1950s, 1960s," he said. "We have to do a lot of that kind of work, in preparation for, eventually, going into a court action." Enditem
