Tanzania: Kikwete Lauds TCC Over Success at 50th Anniversary

Dar Es Salaam - President Jakaya Kikwete has lauded the Tanzania Cigarette Company (TCC) as a success story of the country's privatisation policy.He made the remarks in a statement that was read on his behalf by Industry and Trade minister Cyril Chami during the company's 50th anniversary on Tuesday. "Since its privatisation in 1995, TCC has done very well in a number of areas and is often highlighted as a success story of the privatisation policy," said the President. He hoped that with the support of JTI, which is TCC's mother company, and the dedication of TCC employees, the vision for the company to become the best company in East Africa would be achieved. He called on other companies to emulate TCC's Young Graduate Trainee Programme. "The exposure to first-class-management systems and practices provided under this two-year programme for college and university graduates is commendable and is worth emulation by other companies," he said. He also commended TCC for its reforestation and rural livelihood project in Tabora, calling on the company to expand it to other tobacco-growing areas in the country. The President noted that TCC was well positioned to face challenges posed by the East African Community's common market.JTI President and CEO Pierre de Labouchere said TCC had to contributed projects aimed at supporting marginalised groups as well as to arts and culture.
