Ganzhou Cigarette Factory of Jiangxi Provincial China Tobacco Industry Corporation in east China's Jiangxi Province held a grand ceremony on April 1 to start execution of its 2.2 billion yuan (335 million U.S. dollar) project of relocation and technological transformation, intended to significantly enlarge its annual cigarette production capacity to a total of 30 billion cigarettes (600,000 cases).
Director-General Jiang Chengkang of the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA) - the regulator of China's tobacco industry - was among the dignitaries attending the ceremony.
Under the project, the relocated new Ganzhou Cigarette Factory will be built on a 730 mu (48.67 hectare) plot at the Hong Kong Industrial Park in Ganzhou Development Area in Ganzhou City of the province.
When the two-year project is completed in 2013, the new Ganzhou Cigarette Factory will have become a park-style cigarette making enterprise that will be highly automatic, modernized and intellectualized. The new tobacco manufacturing enterprise is expected to make greater contribution to promoting cigarette production in Jiangxi to a higher level and accelerating economic development in the province.
The project of relocation and technological transformation of Ganzhou Cigarette Factory was adopted by Jiangxi Provincial China Tobacco Industry Corporation in efforts to meet the general trend of development of the tobacco industry in China. The project also involves the relocation and technological transformation of another cigarette factory - Xingguo Cigarette Factory - in the province.
In March, Ganzhou Cigarette Factory publicly invited tenders for general designing of the project. The general designing is expected to be approved by June.
When the project is completed, the new Ganzhou Cigarette Factory will be capable of annually generating 8.5 billion yuan (1.29 billion U.S. dollars) in sales income, including 5 billion yuan (762 million U.S. dollars) in taxes and profits, with the amount of taxes alone expected to reach 4 billion yuan (609 million U.S. dollars). The first phase of the project foresees an initial annual cigarette production capacity of 20 billion cigarettes (400,000 cases). Enditem
