Cigarette Factory Completes Relocation, Technological Transformation Earlier

Mianyang branch of Sichuan-Chongqing Regional China Tobacco Industry Corporation in southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing City, which was seriously damaged in a devastating earthquake in 2008, has recently completed the process of relocation and technological transformation ahead of schedule, after more than two years of busy construction. The post-earthquake relocation and technological transformation of Mianyang branch of Sichuan-Chongqing Regional China Tobacco Industry Corporation was fully supported by the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration (STMA) - the operator of China's tobacco industry. On the May 12, 2008, a devastating earthquake hit southwest China, killing at least 69,197 people. The Central Government of China launched a three-year program of reconstructing the disaster areas, hoping that the post-earthquake reconstruction could be basically accomplished in two years' time. After the earthquake, the STMA swiftly approved the project to relocate the Mianyang branch of Sichuan-Chongqing Regional China Tobacco Industry Corporation. On July 12, 2008, a ceremony was held to break ground and lay the foundation for building the joint workshop building. On July 12, 2009, reconstruction of the new Mianyang branch was started on a full scale. So far, a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan (220 million U.S. dollars) has been made in the project of relocation and technological transformation. With completion of the project, the annual cigarette production capacity of the Mianyang branch of Sichuan-Chongqing Regional China Tobacco Industry Corporation has reached 500,000 cases (25 billion cigarettes).
